The Therapy Collective Supervision Model

SUPERVISION & CONSULTATION

My Background & Experience

Hi! I'm Angelica "Angel" Abston. The first half of my career I worked with adolescents and families in residential and community-based treatment. I then moved to an outpatient hospital setting where I saw a wide range of patients and developed a deeper understanding of ways that trauma impacts the body.

Through this work and additional training, I adapted my practice to work with adults impacted by trauma and attachment injury.  I also work with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, anger management issues, grief and loss, and difficulty with life transitions.

Since moving to private practice, I’ve cultivated my practice to integrate the following treatment modalities:

  • Psychodynamic Individual and Group Therapy
  • Person-Centered Therapy
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • The Gottman Method
  • Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT)
  • Eye-movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR)

Supervisory Experience

I have 4 years of experience providing group and individual supervision and consultation in an outpatient setting with interns and psychiatry residents.  I completed 45 hours of Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) training from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro (UNCG) and I am an Approved Clinical Supervisor, ACS-4691.

The primary supervision model that I adhere to is the Integrative Developmental Model, where I identify where you are in your professional development and then match my supervision interventions appropriately. Focus is on improving awareness of self and other in the therapeutic relationship, improving skills, and increasing autonomy.

I also have experience and training in the following areas and feel confident in working with supervisees and consultants in these areas:

  • Adolescents and Family Systems
  • Education Systems and IEP plans
  • Case Management and working with DHS
  • Multisystemic Therapy
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
  • Safety and Crisis Intervention
  • Severe and persistent mental illnesses
  • Transference and Countertransference

Who I Work With Best

For Supervision

As an LPC, I am qualified to work with Licensed Professional Counselor Candidates (LPCC).

I enjoy working with new therapists.  Maybe you're at an agency that offers little to no clinical supervision. You may find yourself feeling uncertain and ungrounded.  I would love to offer you guidance and empower you to grow as a therapist.

I view supervision as a collaborative approach.  We will both need to identify goals and needs for your development. I work best with individuals that are open to feedback and suggestions and can also embrace there is no singular right approach to therapy.

For Consultation

Consultation looks different than supervision. As an experienced and fully licensed therapist, you are under your own license and my role is to support your goals.  Consultation is on an as needed basis. Whether you're in at an agency or private practice setting here are a few of the ways I can support you:

  • Reflective Consultation
  • Countertransference awareness
  • Conceptualization and diagnosis
  • Transitioning to Private Practice
  • Insurance, documentation and note taking
  • EMDR (Hours do not count towards EMDRIA certification)
  • Work-life synergy
  • Burnout prevention and recovery
