Feeling nervous? You’re not alone.
Starting therapy can stir up a lot, hope, curiosity, uncertainty, even fear. If you’ve never been to therapy before (or if you’ve had a not-so-great experience in the past), you might be wondering: What actually happens in that first session? Will I have to talk about everything right away? What if I get emotional? What if I don’t even know where to begin?
Take a deep breath. You don’t have to have it all figured out. Here’s what you can expect and what we want you to know before you walk through our doors.
A Soft Landing: You Set the Pace
At The Therapy Collective, we believe in meeting you exactly where you are. That means:
- You don’t have to dive into your life story right away.
- You don’t need to come in with a clear goal or agenda.
- You won’t be judged or pushed to disclose more than you’re ready for.
Instead, your first session is a chance to get to know your therapist and for them to begin to understand what’s bringing you in. Some people show up and want to share everything in the first session. Others sit quietly, unsure of where to begin. Both are welcome.
A Conversation, Not an Interrogation
Your therapist may ask some gentle questions to learn more about you:
- What’s been feeling hard lately?
- What made you decide to reach out now?
- Have you tried therapy before? What worked and what didn’t?
- What kind of support are you hoping for?
But this isn’t a checklist or a pop quiz. It’s a human-to-human conversation. You’re allowed to say, “I don’t know,” “I’m not ready to talk about that,” or “Can we come back to this later?”
Clarifying the Fit
A big part of the first session is making sure it feels like a good match, for both of you. Your therapist will talk a little about how they work, what therapy might look like moving forward, and what kind of support they can offer. You’re welcome to ask questions, too. For example:
- What’s your approach to anxiety/depression/trauma/etc.?
- Do you give homework or more just listen?
- What happens if I need to cancel or take a break?
Therapy works best when the relationship feels safe and collaborative. If it doesn’t feel like the right fit, that’s okay too – we’ll help you explore other options. Some folks find it difficult to share with their therapist if it’s not the right fit, but we get it. We’ve gone through a similar process ourselves.
The First Step Toward Relief
Sometimes people leave their first session feeling lighter, clearer, or more hopeful. Other times, it can stir things up. Or you may even feel a “vulnerability hangover” . That’s completely normal. You’ve taken a courageous first step. And even just naming what’s hard can start to shift something inside.
You don’t need to know where this journey is going yet. You just need to begin.
We’re Here to Help You Start
If you’re thinking about therapy but aren’t sure where to begin or even what kind of therapy is best…we can help. Whether you’re seeking individual support, group therapy, or a family session, we’ll talk it through and guide you to the
right therapist. If we’re not the right fit, we take pride in working with clients to find a specific referral in the Denver Metro area that is.
Reach out. We’ll help you take that first step.
